Archbold Integrative Medicine Center Marks Ten Years of Healing

Thursday, October 27, 2011

The Archbold Integrative Medicine Center opened its doors in October 2001. Nearly a decade later the Center has treated thousands of patients (14,000 patient visits just last year) using a blend of proven alternative therapies and conventional medicine.

Integrative medicine is a healing-oriented medicine that focuses on healing the whole person, emphasizing the therapeutic relationship, making use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative.

The Archbold Integrative Medicine Center is focused on alleviating pain and restoring patients to a healthy state-of-being. Using a range of complementary treatments, integrative medicine combines conventional medicine with other practices—including acupuncture, herbal treatments, massage, mind-body approaches, nutrition and stress management—with standard  medical care to keep patients in good health.

“Complementary therapies work alongside standard medical care,” said John A. Mansberger, MD, medical director of Archbold’s Integrative Medicine Center and general surgeon. “For example, acupuncture, an ancient Chinese technique of stimulating points on the body, can help manage painful side effects of cancer treatment. Similarly, we may use a special diet to treat gastrointestinal or heart disease as an alternative to surgery or medication.”

Mansberger says that the Center has seen an increase in patient referrals from other physicians who are incorporating supplements and nutritional counseling into their own practices.

“Over the past ten years we’ve seen a steady increase in the support for integrative treatments,” said Mansberger. “It’s great tosee physicians incorporating integrative medicine—things once considered to be outside conventional medicine—with standard medical care. I’ve seen positive outcomes for patients suffering from fibromyalgia, an irritable bowel, headaches,  menopausal symptoms and pain from all causes, just to name a few of the conditions successfully treated through integrative techniques.”

Mansberger added that the Integrative Center has offered a wide variety of health services and programs that are unique to this size community.

“Since our inception, we’ve set up programs such as H.O.P.E. (Helping Oncology Patients Exercise), Tai Chi classes, yogaclasses, healthy living workshops and a number of educational classes, covering a wide variety of health issues and integrative topics. With the consistent support of the community and many of our local physicians, the Integrative Center continues to thrive and grow, and I’m proud of all the practitioners here, whose passion for integrative healing has contributed to its success.”
