Archbold Offers Free Cancer Screenings
at Relay for Life

Thursday, May 10, 2012

This Friday, the Thomas County community will gather for Relay for Life.

The annual event celebrating cancer survivors and remembering those lost to cancer is also an ideal time for early detection through free health screenings.

Archbold physicians and staff will be offering free cancer screenings as well as cardiovascular screenings at the event. Patients will be screened for prostate, skin and oral cancer, and free take-home ColoCare kits will be available for patients to screen for colorectal disease, including colon cancer. Cardiovascular screenings will include cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure and body mass index.

“Cancer screenings often lead to an early diagnosis for people without any signs or symptoms of the disease,” said Archbold radiation oncologist Steven Johnson, MD. “Early detection is often the key to successful treatment of cancer. Everyone should take advantage of the free screenings, even if you aren’t experiencing any warning signs of cancer.”

Archbold offers health screenings free of charge as part of the hospital’s Community Benefit commitment, an organizational Core Value focused on improving lives in the communities the hospital serves.

“It’s very common that an Archbold screening participant is made aware of a chronic condition that may have otherwise been diagnosed too late or not diagnosed at all,” said Almeda Simpson, assistant vice president for clinical and community outreach at Archbold.

The free health screenings will be held from 5 to 8 pm during the event at the Thomasville High School track. Those interested in cardiovascular screenings are advised to refrain from eating or drinking sweetened liquids for at least six hours before their screening. The screenings will take place in the Archbold Memorial Hospital screening tent.
