REDUCING THE RISK OF DEVELOPING DIABETES

The number of people in the U.S. living with diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes has more than quadrupled in the past 30 years – rising from 5.6 million in 1980 to 23.6 million in 2007, the most recent year for which data is available.  Southern U.S. states have seen the largest jump in diabetes rates.  Click to read more.

ARCHBOLD SCREENINGS IDENTIFY CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE EARLY

In the time it will take you to read this article, approximately three Americans will suffer a heart attack, stroke or other coronary event. In Georgia, nearly 2.3 million people don’t know the risk factors for heart disease. And in Thomas County – one out of every 189 residents died from cardiovascular disease between 1996-2000, according to the most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In order to identify cardiovascular disease early, Archbold Memorial Hospital sponsors free cardiac and vascular screenings each month to detect high blood pressure, high cholesterol, aortic aneurysm risk, peripheral arterial disease and carotid artery disease.  Click to read more.

ARCHBOLD AUXILIARY MAKES A LONG-TERM COMMITMENT FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

For the Auxiliary at Archbold Memorial Hospital, a project to get books in the homes of children has been like The Little Engine That Could, except they said, “I think WE can.” Originally, the Auxiliary was registering all babies born at Archbold to receive the books and funding the first book, the childhood classic, The Little Engine That Could. The Literacy Project Committee of Thomas County Family Connections was covering the remainder of the cost of the books.  Click to read more.

ARCHBOLD TRAUMA CENTER RETAINS LEVEL 2 DESIGNATION

One in every 1,587 Georgians will die from a trauma related death. This grim statistic could be improved if more of the 152 statewide hospitals operated as trauma centers.

Fortunately for citizens of Thomas County and the surrounding area, access to top-level trauma care is right here in Thomasville. John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital operates one of only 16 “designated” trauma centers in Georgia and the only trauma center in Georgia south of Columbus, Macon and Savannah.  Click to read more.
