Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, outside of skin cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. Archbold is committed to the women in our community and women’s healthcare. Consistent investments in technology and the dedication of our expert providers have greatly increased Archbold’s ability to detect breast cancers early, while they are most treatable. The Archbold Women’s Center introduced 3D Mammography in August 2016, nine years ago this month.
Archbold first introduced an X-ray unit dedicated to mammography in 1988.
The Adrian & Jessie Archbold Ambulatory Care Center (right) opened in August 2002. The facility contained an ambulatory surgery center, the Archbold Women’s Center, and an outpatient diagnostic imaging facility under one roof. The Archbold Women’s Center, the first facility of this type dedicated to diagnostic women’s care in the region, included four mammography suites, a dedicated breast ultrasound, a stereotactic breast unit for minimally invasive breast biopsy, and two exam/consultation rooms. The facility provided women in our community with 11,992 diagnostic procedures in its first year alone and continues to provide potentially life-saving care.
In 2012, the American College of Radiology named the Archbold Women’s Center a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. The designation meant Archbold had earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. The Archbold Women’s Center was the first facility in the region to earn the designation.
In 2016, the Archbold Women’s Center introduced 3D mammography technology, the most advanced imaging technology available to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. 3D mammography offers unprecedented views of the breast to radiologists, and the technology has contributed to increased rates of breast cancer detection at the Archbold Women’s Center. The addition of 3D mammography was partially funded with proceeds from Pink Affair, an annual fashion show event that celebrates cancer survivors (left).
Less than two years later, 3D mammography was introduced at Archbold Grady (right).
These additions were some of the many strides made in advanced imaging and minimally invasive surgery made at Archbold during the tenure of President/CEO Perry Mustian. Major additions to Archbold, including the North Tower and Lewis Hall Singletary Archbold Cancer Center were also constructed during Mustian’s tenure. He retired in 2020 after two decades at Archbold.
