Today in Archbold History: Brooks County Hospital Joins Archbold Family

June 1, 1987

Archbold Brooks, our 25-bed acute care hospital in Quitman, Georgia, joined the Archbold family on June 1, 1987, thirty-eight years ago today.

Originally opened in 1936 as Brooks County Hospital, the facility has offered Georgia’s Camellia City dependable care for nearly ninety years. Archbold Brooks provides 24-hour emergency care, acute care services, outpatient services, and a swing-bed program.

In July 1982, the Hospital Authority of Brooks County entered into a long-term management agreement with John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital. Archbold began to lease the building itself in 1987.

In a past edition of Georgia Trend Magazine, Archbold Brooks was recognized as one of the top three critical access hospitals in the state.

A 2021 report from the Georgia Hospital Association shows the significance of Archbold Brooks’ presence in Quitman beyond the emergency room. The hospital provides the community with nearly 100 full-time jobs and more than $25 million in total economic impact.

Kortney Adams Thomas, RN, MSN, has been with Archbold Brooks since 2000 and was named Administrator and Director of Nursing earlier this year.

“I have been with Archbold Brooks for more than half of the hospital’s relationship with Archbold,” said Thomas. “I am proud to have worked alongside so many hardworking people dedicated to the wellbeing of Quitman and the surrounding communities. As the services offered at the hospital have grown and other Archbold facilities in Quitman have opened, the positive impact of Archbold on our community is evident.”

Archbold congratulates the people and hospital authority of Brooks County on nearly nine decades of success and celebrates our four-decade partnership that has increased access, helped those in need, and connected communities in our region.
