Archbold Neurosurgeon Gerald Kadis, MD, one of our region’s longest-serving and most respected physicians, has announced his retirement. At the time of his retirement last month, Dr. Kadis was the third-longest tenured member of the Archbold Medical Staff. His nearly half a century of service to our community and excellent reputation undoubtedly make him one of the greatest physicians in Archbold’s 100-year history.
Dr. Kadis was born and raised in Brookline, Massachusetts. He graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1971. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York.
In 1979, following the completion of his residency, Dr. Kadis moved 900 miles south to Thomasville to begin his career at John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital. Much like many Northerners before him and Archbold’s New York-born founder, Jack Archbold, Dr. Kadis found Thomasville a warm and welcoming home, and he never left. His animals came with him and found a home in our warm climate.
Dr. Kadis was a strong advocate for establishing a trauma center at Archbold. The idea that Archbold should continue to pursue technological advancements and lead the region, strongly advocated by Dr. Kadis and other leaders at the time, is responsible for much of Archbold’s success today.
Dr. Kadis practiced with Dr. Craig Allen Fredericks for more than thirty years. Dr. Fredericks, who passed away in 2022, is fondly remembered by the Archbold team. Together with Dr. Fredericks, Dr. Kadis consistently advanced the neurosurgery offerings at Archbold and throughout South Georgia.
From implantable spinal pain pumps introduced in the 1990s to Nevro HF10 spinal cord stimulation therapy, Dr. Kadis has been the driving force behind each advancement in neurosurgical treatment at Archbold. Perhaps his most lasting legacy, the Gamma Knife, has forever changed the treatment of disorders in the brain and upper spine at Archbold. Thousands of families in our community have been touched by this advancement alone.
Outside of the practice, Dr. Kadis has always enjoyed cooking and working in his garden. He is a loving father of two children and a husband to Vivian.
At the time of his retirement, Archbold Neurology/Neurosurgery had about 800 active patients. However, the number of people who have been touched by the career, expertise, and compassion of Dr. Gerald Kadis is far greater.
The entire Archbold team, medical staff and administration congratulate Dr. Kadis on his uniquely impactful career and thank him for his 46 years of service to our community.
