Today in Archbold History: Archbold Mitchell Joins Archbold Family

October 1, 1990

Archbold Mitchell, our 25-bed critical access hospital in Camilla, Georgia, joined the Archbold family on October 1, 1990, thirty-five years ago today.

The ground for the hospital was broken on October 4, 1948. The hospital, then known as Mitchell County Hospital, was dedicated and placed into service on September 11, 1949.

In October 1990, the Hospital Authority of Mitchell County entered into a long-term management agreement with John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital. Operation of Mitchell County’s two nursing homes, Pelham Parkway Nursing Home and Mitchell Convalescent Center, were turned over to Archbold at the same time. The facilities are now known as Archbold Living-Pelham and Archbold Living-Camilla.

In a past edition of Georgia Trend magazine, Archbold Mitchell was recognized as one of the top small hospitals in the state.

A 2021 report from the Georgia Hospital Association shows the significance of Archbold Mitchell’s presence in Camilla beyond the emergency room. The hospital provides the community with nearly 142 full-time jobs and more than $76 million in total economic impact.

Late last year, Archbold Mitchell celebrated 75 years of bringing hope and healing to its community. To celebrate the milestone, staff and members of the community enjoyed a drop-in-style celebration at the hospital.

“I have proudly served my community at Archbold Mitchell first as a nurse, then as the Director of Nursing and now as the Administrator,” said Carla Beasley, Administrator at Archbold Mitchell, during the 75th anniversary celebrations. “Working at Archbold Mitchell, I see firsthand why this hospital is so important to our community.”

Archbold congratulates the people and hospital authority of Mitchell County on more than 75 years of success and celebrates our 35-year partnership that has increased access, helped those in need, and connected communities in our region.
