Archbold Pulmonology Celebrates 500th Robotic Bronchoscopic Biopsy

Archbold Pulmonology offers patients state-of-the-art technology with the Intuitive Ion robotic bronchoscopy system—a cutting-edge platform that enables pulmonologists to reach hard-to-access lung nodules with unprecedented precision.

The team of pulmonologists—Ronald S. Batin, MD; Christian J. Trujillo, MD; and Luis Wulff, MD—completed their 500th robotic-assisted lung biopsy using the Ion system on February 11, 2026.

This milestone reflects Archbold’s continued commitment to investing in advanced diagnostic capabilities, supporting earlier detection and faster treatment for patients across Southwest Georgia.

“The Ion system has been transformational for our practice and for this community,” said Dr. Batin. “It allows us to access all 18 segments of the lungs to obtain tissue safely and accurately. When lung nodules are found to be cancerous, performing biopsy locally with the Ion system at Archbold often allows treatment to begin earlier and with greater confidence.”

The Ion system features an ultra-thin, highly maneuverable catheter that enables providers to navigate deep into the peripheral lung with exceptional stability. This precision improves diagnostic accuracy compared to traditional approaches and represents a significant advancement in pulmonary medicine.

Lung nodules—abnormal growths within the lung—may be caused by cancer, infection, autoimmune disease, or other conditions. Obtaining an accurate biopsy is the most reliable way to determine the cause and guide appropriate treatment.

“Reaching this milestone reflects our commitment to bringing advanced pulmonary care to our region,” said Dr. Trujillo. “For many patients, the uncertainty surrounding a lung nodule can be deeply stressful. Being able to provide timely answers and a clear path forward is one of the most meaningful aspects of what we do.”

Archbold Pulmonology’s commitment to patients extends well beyond diagnosis. From the initial discovery of a lung nodule through treatment and follow-up, Archbold’s Lung Navigator, Montana Harstad, RN, works closely with patients to coordinate care and ensure access to the resources they need at every step.

“Completing our 500th robotic biopsy is a proud moment for our team,” said Dr. Wulff. “It represents not just a number, but hundreds of patients who were able to receive advanced diagnostic care close to home. We remain committed to providing this region with leading-edge technology and the highest standard of pulmonary care.”
