Grady General Hospital Boosts Local Economy

Archbold generated more than $790 million for the local and state economy in 2021, according to a recently released Georgia Hospital Association report. The report found that Archbold’s Grady General Hospital (GGH) contributed more than $63 million to the regional economy in the same period. The yearly report uses U.S. Department of Commerce analysis to measure the ripple effect of direct hospital expenditures in other sectors of the economy.

“While our primary mission will always be to provide access to high-quality healthcare and cutting-edge technologies, we are proud of Archbold’s significant positive impact on the economy of South Georgia,” said Darcy Craven, Archbold President and CEO.

According to the report, Archbold provided more than $40 million in uncompensated care for patients in the region, of which more than $4.1 million was provided by GGH. The four-hospital system currently employs more than 2,300 people full-time. GGH employs 151 people full-time in Cairo. According to the report, a U.S. Department of Commerce multiplier reveals that a total of 7,163 jobs are supported in the region due to the economic activity of Archbold Medical Center. The economic activity of GGH supports an additional 381 jobs in the Cairo area.

Archbold is a significant component of the region’s economic strength. According to the GHA report, for every Archbold employee, there is more than one supporting job created throughout the region and state. In addition, the funds the organization spends on goods and services flow from the hospital to businesses, and those funds ripple through the local economy.

“Our purpose is to ensure every resident of Cairo and Grady County has access to high-quality, compassionate health care,” said Crystal D. Wells, administrator of GGH. “We believe GGH plays a large role in making Grady County a great place to live, work and raise a family.”

Archbold’s Grady General Hospital is a 60-bed acute care hospital recognized nationally and state-wide for stellar performance and quality measures. GGH offers residents around-the-clock emergency care, a high-quality birthing center, and numerous inpatient and outpatient procedures conveniently in Cairo.

A $20 million state-of-the-art long-term care facility is under construction at GGH. The 75-bed facility will offer rehabilitation services, skilled nursing services, wound care, medical care and pain management. The new facility is slated to open this fall.
