Archbold Otolaryngology Surgeon Lorraine M. Williams-Rahming, MD, MPH, FACS, has completed the system's first Inspire® implant procedure. Inspire therapy is an easy-to-use, mask-free solution for people with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who are unable to benefit from CPAP.
"OSA is the most common type of sleep apnea. It occurs when the tongue relaxes back into your airway during sleep, blocking your airway. When your airway is blocked, your body triggers you to wake up and gasp for air," shared Williams-Rahming. "When you have OSA, this cycle happens repeatedly, preventing you from getting the quality sleep you need."
Inspire therapy syncs with your natural breathing pattern and works comfortably inside your body to keep your airway open while you sleep. This enables you to breathe regularly and sleep better. A small handheld Inspire remote is used to turn therapy on when users are ready to sleep, requiring no mask or hose.
The latest generation of Inspire therapy, the Inspire V™ System, is an innovative advancement designed to simplify the procedure. With a new integrated respiratory sensor, the Inspire V System eliminates the need for providers to place a separate sensing lead, allowing respiratory sensing to occur within the implant.
The procedure consists of two small incisions. One is in your upper chest, where the Inspire implant is placed. The second is under your chin, where the nerve that controls airway muscles, including your tongue, is located. Gentle pulses are applied to the nerve when the therapy is turned on, keeping the airway open while you sleep.
"We are excited to offer this treatment to our community," added Williams-Rahming. "Inspire therapy represents a significant advancement in the treatment of sleep apnea. It is clinically proven to reduce sleep apnea events, has a high level of patient satisfaction and a high therapy adherence."
