Archbold Cancer Center to Host Prostate Cancer Screening

The American Cancer Society estimates that one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men, with an estimated 333,830 new cases expected to be diagnosed in 2026.

Experts say several factors can increase a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer, including age, family history, ethnicity, and overall health.

Although prostate cancer is a serious disease, the good news is that most men diagnosed with it will not die from it. In fact, more than 3.1 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer are alive today.

“Prostate cancer can often be detected early, when it is most treatable, through two screening tests,” said Timothy Grayson, MD, urologist at Archbold Urology. “A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is commonly used along with a digital rectal exam (DRE), a physical exam that allows providers to check the prostate gland for abnormal growth or enlargement.”

On Thursday, September 17, Dr. Grayson will join Archbold radiation oncologists Steve Johnson, MD, David Saunders, MD, and Archbold urologist Eric Webb, MD, to offer free prostate screenings from 4:30pm to 6:30pm at the Lewis Hall Singletary Archbold Cancer Center. Participants will receive a DRE exam and a PSA test during the screening. Test results will be provided at no cost as part of Archbold’s ongoing commitment to community health and its Core Value of Community.

“We encourage men in our community over the age of 50 to take advantage of this free screening opportunity, even if they aren’t experiencing any symptoms,” said Dr. Johnson. “Early detection is one of the most important factors in the successful treatment of prostate cancer.”
