Pelvic & OB Ultrasound

The Archbold Women’s Center offers private ultrasound suites in a calming environment for women needing a pelvic ultrasound. For pregnant patients, the ultrasound suite has plenty of room to accommodate select family members you’d like present during your procedure.

Pelvic Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging of the pelvis uses sound waves to produce pictures of the structures and organs in the lower abdomen and pelvis. The two types of pelvic ultrasound for women are abdominal and vaginal. These exams are frequently used to evaluate the reproductive and urinary systems. A pelvic ultrasound is also often used to rule out benign and cancerous abnormalities.

An ultrasound procedure is safe, non-invasive, and does not use ionizing radiation.

In women, a pelvic ultrasound is most often performed to evaluate the:

  • uterus
  • cervix
  • ovaries
  • fallopian tubes
  • bladder

Pelvic ultrasound examinations can help diagnose symptoms experienced by women such as:

  • pelvic pain
  • abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • other menstrual problems

Pelvic ultrasounds also help identify:

  • palpable masses such as ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids
  • ovarian or uterine cancers

Obstetric Ultrasound

If you’re pregnant, your physician will likely order several obstetric ultrasounds during your pregnancy. Obstetric ultrasound uses sound waves to produce pictures of a baby (embryo or fetus) within a pregnant woman, as well as the mother's uterus and ovaries.

Obstetric ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation, so it has no known harmful effects and is the preferred method for monitoring pregnant women and their unborn babies. A Doppler ultrasound study – a technique that evaluates blood flow in the umbilical cord, fetus, or placenta – may also be performed during this type of exam.
