Archbold Hospice hosted the 20th edition of Camp HEAL, an annual bereavement day camp for children, earlier this month at Camp Pineywoods in Thomas County.
Camp HEAL (Healing and Encouragement After Loss) helps children ages 6 to 12 learn to cope with the loss of a loved one by providing a safe, fun environment where they can express themselves and meet others facing a similar situation.
“Activities at camp focused on play, balanced with discussions of loss and activities geared toward remembrance of loved ones,” shared Linda Conti, Bereavement Coordinator at Archbold Hospice. “Campers enjoyed activities like hay rides, archery, journaling, pet therapy, and interactions with animals from Chehaw Park and Zoo.”
Campers were supported by a dedicated team of 35 volunteers and trained grief counselors. Among the volunteers were 15 medical students who attend PCOM South Georgia in Moultrie.
The Archbold Foundation underwrites Camp HEAL, allowing campers to attend at no charge. Gifts received at the Annual Tree of Lights event and designated to Archbold Hospice throughout the year make this event possible.
“Losing a loved one is difficult at any age, but it is especially hard on a child,” said Sheri Walters, Archbold Hospice administrator. “Camp HEAL provides children a unique opportunity to learn that they are not alone in their grief and that support is available.
If you are interested in financially supporting the mission of Camp HEAL, please visit the Archbold Foundation website, designate your donation to Archbold Hospice, and make a note that you’d like to specifically support Camp HEAL. This event is always free to attend for our campers because of the support of generous donors.
